The most widely covered trial in America this week has been in a Los Angeles courtroom where the University of Texas and Ryan O'Neal are duking it out over an Andy Warhol portrait of his on and off again partner, Farah Fawcett, a UT alum.
This gives me an excuse to blog about a forgotten piece of Houston history - when Andy Warhol did a television commercial for the Houston restaurant, Brennan's.
According to an October 6, 1986, article by Paul Frumkin in Nation's Restaurant News, Warhol's ten second spot encouraged viewers:
"For the most exciting food in Houston, go to Brennan's. Ask for Dick and Alex Brennan and tell them Andy Warhol sent you."
When I first saw that spot, I asked my mother who that was. She said it was somebody who thought I'd be famous some day. I was excited for about as long as it took me to get the World Book Encyclopedia out and look up Andy Warhol.
I don't know anyone who has a copy of that commercial. It's not on youtube and none of the Houstorians have turned it up.
If you really want to know, go ask at Brennan's - and tell them Andy Warhol sent you.
Update: Ryan O'Neal won the jury verdict. CNN.com has a good round-up of the whole case
