Forensic Psychiatry - Talk of the Nation (Updated)
Posted on Jul 30, 2012 5:34pm PDT
For those interested in the intersection between mental health and criminal defense (insanity, competency, mitigation, etc.,) today the NPR program Talk of the Nation featured a discussion
"How Forensic Psychiatry Informs Trials." (Transcript
here) with mental health and legal professionals in studio and on the phone, including yours truly.
Update: Speaking of Jared Loughner, various news outlets
report that his competency has been restored via
forced medication and he is going to plea guilty in federal court in exchange for a sentence of life in prison. Whether prosecution in Arizona state court will go forward is unknown, however unlikely considering that there is little likelihood that he will ever be released from federal prison. While life in a federal prison may seem like a plea but not much of a bargain, he could be facing the death penalty.
